Prompt Optimizer: An Open-Source Tool for Better Prompts

Anyone who has used AI knows the feeling: with the same request, a well-written prompt and a badly written one produce wildly different results. The problem is that most people simply aren’t good at writing prompts — not for lack of talent, but for lack of a systematic optimization process.

I recently came across an open-source project, Prompt Optimizer — nearly 29k stars on GitHub — built to solve exactly this.

Prompt Optimizer is a prompt optimization tool. Simply put: hand it a rough prompt, and it reworks that prompt into a more precise, more structured version, noticeably improving the quality of AI output.

The workflow: write → optimize → test → evaluate → save and reuse.

Paste in your raw prompt, hit optimize, and the tool calls an AI model to rewrite and improve it. Not satisfied? Keep iterating — each round optimizes further on top of the last.

When This Helps
This is especially useful when you have a vague idea but don’t know how to express it precisely in a prompt. For example, ‘help me write a strict but useful reviewer persona’ comes back as a clearly structured role definition with scoring criteria.

Two modes are supported:

  • System Prompt optimization: for system-level instructions — good for building AI agents, custom personas, and similar scenarios
  • User Prompt optimization: for user inputs — good for everyday conversations, content generation, and similar scenarios

After optimizing, how do you know the results actually got better? The tool provides analysis and comparative evaluation. You can:

  1. Generate results with the original prompt and the optimized prompt separately
  2. Have the AI compare and score the two outputs
  3. Optimize further based on the evaluation

This closed loop is what sets it apart from hand-editing prompts.

Beyond text prompts, it also supports Text-to-Image prompt optimization — turning a vague one-line description into a professional image prompt with subject, composition, lighting, style, and other details.

Supports mainstream models including OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, Zhipu, SiliconFlow, and MiniMax. Optimize with one model, test with another — mix and match freely.
